Architectural Digest — Next Big Names in Design 2025

From her Lisbon atelier, Inês Gavinho orchestrates a quiet revolution in contemporary design — one whispered conversation at a time. She has mastered the art of luxury that doesn't shout but speaks volumes.

Inês treats each commission as an intimate collaboration, creating what she calls "spatial portraits" — interiors that capture not just aesthetic preferences but the very essence of how people live, dream, and connect.

'We don't design spaces. We design how you live the time you spend in them. And then we build every single one of them ourselves.'
Origins

Inês Gavinho Félix grew up in the Bairrada region of Portugal, in a childhood marked by imagination and a deep connection to roots. Long summers in Caminha, near the Spanish border, opened an early window to other cultures — through proximity to different habits, languages and objects. That experience of contrast between the familiar and the foreign shaped her sensibility: learning to observe detail, value difference, and recognise in the everyday the transformative power of space.

In her family, there was always a natural vocation for care and rigour. Gastronomy, the art of receiving, dressing — everything was imbued with a quiet luxury, made of pride and attention. That spirit materialised in the project started by her parents: GAVINHO, a company that for over three decades has created personalised environments of excellence. Growing up inside this universe made the choice of Architecture inevitable — not as an imposition, but as the natural continuation of an aesthetic and cultural heritage.

Restlessness, however, always accompanied Inês. Her studies in Fine Arts and Architecture enriched her creative vision, revealing that design is not exhausted in catalogues or standardised solutions, but is born from real life, from emotions and lived contexts. By the time she completed her education, she had already discovered that her purpose was larger: to create spaces as life experiences — places that breathe, that evolve, that age with those who inhabit them.

At GAVINHO, Inês walked the path from observer to protagonist, until assuming the role of Creative Director. Today, her signature is defined by a search for authenticity: luxury understood not as ostentation, but as invisible care, proportion, harmony between memory and innovation.

Her design language defies the Instagram-driven excess dominating today's luxury market. Instead, she champions noble materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and the kind of timeless elegance that improves with age.

Approach

What sets Inês apart is her architectural rigour married to poetic sensibility. She doesn't just design rooms; she curates experiences that honour memory while embracing modernity. Whether transforming a historic Lisbon palácio or conceptualising a contemporary residence, she weaves local narrative into global sophistication.

Sustainability isn't an afterthought — it's embedded in her philosophy of creating spaces built for generations. In an era of disposable design, Inês creates lasting beauty — quiet, confident, and profoundly human.

For Inês, designing spaces is, above all, designing life. And life, she believes, deserves to be thought through with time, rigour and soul.

The Founders

GAVINHO was not born from a business plan. It was born from a conviction — shared between two people — that spaces deserve the same care, rigour and irreverence that they brought to everything in life.

Maria Gavinho
Maria Gavinho
Founder & Creative Director Emeritus

Maria Gavinho founded GAVINHO in 1990 with an instinct that needed no formal training — a self-taught creative whose eye for materials, proportion and detail remains virtually impossible to surprise. For over three decades, she led the creative direction of the studio alone, building a reputation for uncompromising standards and an ability to see what others miss. Her exigency is legendary within the studio: every surface, every finish, every joint is held to a standard that accepts nothing less than absolute precision. Maria continues to be an active force within GAVINHO — her taste, her rigour and her irreverent spirit remain embedded in every project.

Armando Félix
Armando Félix
Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Armando Félix brought to GAVINHO what few creative studios possess: the discipline and ethics of banking, married to an instinct for what is right. Having built his career in the financial sector before co-founding the studio, Armando has served as CEO since 1990 — overseeing management, finance and operations with a rectitude that defines the company's character. His standards are as exacting in a spreadsheet as Maria's are in a material sample. Together, they created something rare: a practice where creative ambition and financial integrity are not in tension, but are one and the same. Armando remains at the helm, ensuring that every promise made is a promise kept.

Both irreverent, both exacting, both drawn to what is different — Maria and Armando built GAVINHO not as a company, but as an extension of who they are. The quiet luxury that defines the studio today was always there: in the way they received, in the way they dressed, in the care they brought to every detail of life.

The next chapter

Casa Cultural GAVINHO

At 40, Inês is preparing her next great step: the creation of Casa Cultural GAVINHO — a space of discovery and integration, where Architecture, Design, woodcraft and craftsmanship converge in a platform of experimentation and conscious creation. Dedicated to a small number of deeply significant projects, capable of transcending trends and leaving a timeless mark.

The Team

GAVINHO is deliberately small. Our team operates across every discipline within every project — there are no departments, only people who care about the same outcome.
